Man in M’sia fined S$240 after slapping girlfriend over ‘Good morning’ message

Man fined for slapping girlfriend during argument over message

On Thursday (17 Oct), a 20-year-old storekeeper in Malaysia was fined 800 ringgit (S$240) at the magistrate’s court for slapping his girlfriend.

The assault occurred during an argument over a “Good morning” message on 10 Oct.

That day at around 12.15pm, the accused, Muhamad Nurhaqimi Harun was at work in a pet store at Jalan Parit Bilal when his girlfriend arrived with his lunch.

Things turned sour when the 20-year-old girlfriend brought up an issue from earlier that day.

She had sent him a “Good morning, sayang [my love]” message on Whatsapp, to which she had not received a response.

As she expressed her frustrations, the argument escalated to a heated dispute, causing the accused to then strike her on the left cheek.

The girl reportedly sustained minor injuries.

He faces S$240 fine for his assault

Following the incident, the girlfriend received treatment at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital and reported the matter to the Batu Pahat District Police Headquarters.

The police charged him under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which imposes a sentence of up to one year in jail, a fine of up to 2,000 ringgit (S$600), or both, upon conviction.

Muhammad pleaded guilty in court and was ordered to pay a fine of S$240. However, if he fails, he will serve a 14-day jail sentence instead.
