Man crosses road in Marine Parade glued to phone, smacks car bonnet after driver honks
A man in Singapore was seen crossing the road at the roundabout connecting Amber Road and Parkway Parade while glued to his phone. Seemingly unaware of the incoming vehicle, the man walked across the non-pedestrian crossing without checking for traffic.
When a car had to make an abrupt stop for him, he turned and aggressively smacked the car’s bonnet in anger before walking off.
Footage of the incident was shared by SG Road Vigilante on 16 Nov Facebook where it drew over 300 likes and over 270 comments within 3 hours.
Car stops for jaywalking man glued to phone
According to the footage, the incident occurred on Friday (15 Nov) just after 6pm.
In the footage, the dashcam vehicle was just about to enter the roundabout when a man dressed in a green shirt began to cross the road.
Three other pedestrians noticed the car and stopped to let the car pass.
However, the green-shirted man was glued to his phone as he crossed the road and seemingly did not see the vehicle approaching.
According to the caption, the dashcam vehicle stopped and the driver “lightly tapped” on the horn to alert the jaywalker.
Hearing the horn, the man immediately turned around, walked towards the car, and aggressively slammed the bonnet three times. He continued to stare at the driver before walking away.
After the brief interaction, the vehicle proceeded to the roundabout as the footage ended.
Pedestrians must yield to cars when it’s not a zebra crossing
Unsurprisingly, the comment section of the post was filled with netizens slamming the pedestrian, with some commenters suggesting to the driver to notify the police about the man.
Many pointed out that the car had the right of way as this particular crossing was not a zebra crossing.
Under the Road Traffic Act, pedestrians must yield to cars if they are crossing at non-pedestrian crossings.
A similar accident occurred three days ago. In the early morning of 13 Nov, a woman who was also glued to her phone was hit by a taxi while crossing Orchard Road. The impact launched the woman into the air and punted her over a metre away.
She was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital in a conscious state.
