Every couple dreams of the perfect wedding day. However, fate had something else planned for 22-year-old Nur Izzatul Asma Mustafa and 28-year-old Mohamed Khairie Mohamed Kamal.

The wedding couple ended up being stuck in a flood in Kedah, Malaysia, on the day of their reception (30 Nov).

Flood disrupts wedding day

According to Astro Aswani, it took five months for the couple to organise the wedding reception of 1,000 invited guests.

The wedding reception had been planned since May and involved invitations, bridal outfits, makeup artists, decorations, and souvenirs — with a total cost of approximately RM20,000 (S$6,000).

However, they had to change their plans due to the recent flood that recently hit Kedah.

Many guests weren’t able to come to the reception as vehicles were prohibited from using the route from Pekan Kepala Batas to their homestay in Titi Besi, Kepala Batas, due to the rising water levels.
The food for the reception was packed and distributed to the public instead. Thankfully, the caterer agreed to deliver the food but they had to pack everything, including the souvenirs, for distribution using a lorry.

Moreover, the couple had to rent the homestay for four days as their home in Kampung Alor Ganu was also flooded.

Despite being disappointed, Ms Nur Izzatul and her husband still wore their wedding outfits and did their wedding shoot to commemorate the occasion.

While she was sad about the turn of events, she and her husband still considered their wedding day to be ‘historic’ as they celebrated it amidst the flood.

The couple also took memorable pictures in their wedding outfits on a boat and a four-wheel drive vehicle, using the flooded area as a backdrop.

Groom has mixed feelings

As for the groom, Mr Mohamed Khairie was grateful to the guests who managed to attend the wedding ceremony.

Guests had to take a boat owned by the residents and then ride a four-wheel drive to reach the wedding venue.

He was upset because he could not celebrate with his family from Simpang Kuala as many roads were cut off due to the flooding.

Only three members of his family made it to the wedding ceremony.

“I’ve only seen flood weddings on TV or social media and never imagined I’d experience one myself. However, we’ve accepted it because there’s nothing else we can do,” he said.
