Woman from Taiwan abducted in Thailand after alleged ploy by best friend, family asked to pay S$94K ransom

Woman from Taiwan allegedly abducted for S$94K ransom in Thailand

Earlier this week, a woman from Taiwan visited Thailand where she was abducted and held for ransom.

According to ETtoday, the woman, surnamed Wang, left on a flight from Taiwan to Bangkok at around 5pm last Wednesday (6 Nov).

Allegedly abducted and moved to Myanmar

Security cameras seemingly captured footage of Wang shortly before she left for Thailand.

CCTV clips showed the 21-year-old returning home on her friend’s motorcycle at about 3.12pm. She spent about six minutes at her house before returning downstairs.

Dressed “lightly” and without any luggage, the woman and her friend headed to Kaohsiung International Airport.

Soon after landing, the woman called her boyfriend in a panic. She told him that she was being abducted at gunpoint and that she was being transported to Myanmar.

He lost all contact with her following the harrowing call.

Ransom note delivered to father

The next day, the woman’s father received an anonymous message demanding US$70,000 (S$94,000). The message also claimed that kidnappers had confiscated the woman’s passport and mobile phone.

The father quickly notified authorities who are now investigating the abduction as a case of human trafficking.

Allegedly a ploy by best friend

In an interview with Liberty Times Net, the father claimed the abduction was a ploy by his daughter’s best friend.

Because they hadn’t seen each other in a long time, the friend suggested that the 21-year-old should visit Thailand.

When the daughter told her that she didn’t have enough money for travel, her friend insisted that she’d pay for her air tickets.

His daughter then agreed to accompany her, trusting in their friendship.

Earlier this year, a Malaysian man allegedly fell for a similar ploy when his friend of 10 years contacted him out of the blue. The man offered to pay for a trip to Bangkok so they could catch up. However, he was soon abducted, transported to Myanmar, and held for ransom.
