Customers upset after Astons started charging GST & service charge
Astons Steak & Salad, a popular casual dining chain in Singapore, has sparked online discussions after announcing its decision to implement the prevailing 9% Goods and Services Tax (GST) and a 10% service charge starting 1 Dec.
Known for its affordable, wallet-friendly menu, the move has caught many consumers off guard, leading to an outpouring of reactions across various social media platforms.
Known for its affordable Western food
For years, Astons has built its reputation as a go-to spot for budget-conscious diners seeking hearty Western fare.
The absence of additional taxes and service fees made it especially attractive in a city where dining out can be costly.
However, the restaurant chain has recently announced that it would start charging GST and service fees. It cited ‘increasing operational challenges’ as the reason for the move.
Customers voiced displeasure
The restaurant’s announcement has since circulated online, with many expressing their displeasure and saying that the price hike would make Astons a less attractive dining option compared to others.
A post of the announcement on the Facebook page Wake Up, Singapore was captioned: “That’s basically a 19% increase?”
Some customers, however, were more understanding of the rationale behind the decision, pointing out that charging GST is compulsory once your total taxable turnover exceeds $1 million.
Before 1 Dec, the prices on the restaurant chain’s menu on its website were indicated as ‘nett’ prices.
Since 1 Dec, an additional line has been added to the menu: “All prices subjected to 10% service charge and prevailing government tax.”
The word ‘nett’ has also been removed from the prices.
For context, a chargrilled chicken which previously cost S$24.50 nett at Astons Steak & Salad, will now cost a total of S$29.16 after factoring in the 9% GST (S$2.21) and 10% service charge (S$2.45).
