A 58-year-old man in Singapore recently spent S$345 buying durians from a vendor who came knocking on his door.

However, he couldn’t help but feel cheated after trying the fruits and finding out that the fruits were either unpalatable or of “average quality”.

When the man confronted the vendor, the latter insisted that his durians were of top quality. In the end, the man had no choice but to let the matter rest.

Man claims vendor did not let him try durians

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, Mr Feng (surname transliterated from Chinese) recounted seeing a durian vendor knocking on his door last Saturday (25 May).

To satisfy his craving, the Geylang Bahru resident expressed his interest in buying two durians for S$18 per kg. However, the vendor claimed there was a minimum order of four durians and said he would throw in a complimentary one as well.

Even though Mr Feng was reluctant to buy four durians, he eventually gave in to the vendor.

Recounting the incident, Mr Feng claimed the vendor did not let him try the fruits.

When it came to examining the fruits, Mr Feng said the vendor only allowed him to do so via a small hole in the husk. The vendor apparently did so quickly while praising the fruits’ quality.

Durian vendor threw in complimentary durian and S$11 discount

The durians ended up weighing 19.8kg, which translated to S$356.

However, Mr Feng was not pleased as he felt he was being forced to buy the fruits.

In particular, the 58-year-old noticed that the vendor was picking larger-sized durians, seemingly with the intention of cheating him.

Sensing his customer’s unhappiness, the vendor threw in a free durian and reduced the price to S$345.

Shortly after, Mr Feng tasted the durians but was unsatisfied with their quality. He claimed the complimentary durian was “unpalatable” and that the other four tasted average.

Mr Feng subsequently rushed to his block’s void deck to confront the vendor.

However, the vendor insisted that his durians were of good quality. In the end, Mr Feng had no choice but to let the matter slide.
