Message in bottle drifts from Brazil to Australia found after 16 years

A man in Australia recently discovered a bottle containing a letter that had been adrift for 16 years. The bottle had made its way to Australia from Brazil after an American man chucked it into the sea during one of his cruises.

According to news.com.au, the bottled message was found by a local in Peterborough, Victoria.

“I have placed bottles like this one in several oceans at many different locations all over the world in the hope that people like you might find this bottle and return the note to me in the United States,” the letter continues.

The typed letter included blanks that Mr Johnson filled in with a pen, indicating that this was something he did regularly.

The man also wrote that he left the bottle adrift just off a coast in Brazil on 3 Nov 2008.

He thanked the recipient and promised US$20 (S$27) if they would send the note back to him.

Discovery goes viral

The discovery was posted to a local Facebook group and quickly went viral. At the time of writing, the post has garnered over 51,000 likes and over 4,100 shares.

News of the find quickly made its way to Mr Johnson, who spoke to ABC Radio Melbourne’s Breakfast program about it on Tuesday (26 Nov).

“I’ve been to Australia and I probably threw a few bottles in the water there, but this one is from Brazil,” he said from his home in Maryland, United States.

He went on to say that he took many cruises with his wife and that he didn’t remember that specific bottle. He admitted he had likely dropped about a hundred bottles into the water.

However, he had only heard back from one other person.
