Elderly man drowns after losing control of car & crashing into drainage ditch
A 75-year-old man drowned after his car crashed into a drainage ditch in Kapit, Sarawak, Malaysia at around 6am on Wednesday (27 Nov).
According to Kapit District Police Chief DSP Rohana Nanu, heavy rain since the previous night caused water to accumulate on the road, leading to the man losing control of his vehicle.
Strong currents then swept the car into a nearby river, where it sank.
Man pronounced dead at the scene
The Sibu Zone Fire and Rescue Department responded to the emergency call at 7am and dispatched personnel to the scene.
They retrieved the victim around 7.40am, but he was pronounced dead by medical personnel upon their arrival.
His body was subsequently handed over to the police for further action.
A water pipe near the crash site was also found to be damaged, spewing water like a fountain, according to Sin Chew Daily.
Victim had just dropped off wife at the market
The victim was identified as Bangau Amping, a retired pastor.
He had just dropped off his wife to sell vegetables at the town market before the incident occurred.
As he was driving home, he turned onto a side road that was flooded, causing his car to lose traction and crash into the drainage ditch.
