Marine Terrace community cats were brothers who died 2 days apart
In a heart-rending turn of events, a pair of community cats in Marine Terrace both suffered the same fate — getting killed by cars.
The ill-fated brothers, who both had white marks on their necks that made them look like they wearing tuxedos, died two days apart, meeting their demise at almost the same spot.
Older of Marine Terrace community cats dies on 16 Nov
The sad story was related in a Facebook post first uploaded last Saturday (16 Nov) by Cats of Marine Terrace, a page set up to help the community cats in the neighbourhood.
It informed followers that BatBat, the older of the brothers, had passed away at around midnight.
Witnesses apparently saw a car driving “very fast” down a small single-lane road before hitting the cat.
When a passer-by caught up with the driver, he allegedly denied hitting the cat and behaved angrily, the post said.
An update later that day said the accident could’ve been prevented, according to witnesses, as two other cars had previously driven down the road and avoided BatBat.
The page also claimed that the driver who hit BatBat “purposely sped up” on the small road.
Caregivers appeal for accident footage
Cats of Marine Terrace said a police report had been made and officers came down to the scene immediately to record the driver’s details.
They appealed for other witnesses, including dashcam footage from other cars.
They are also trying to get the police report number so the Cat Welfare Society can do a follow-up on the accident.
Other cat was not eating & was looking for his brother
Turning their focus to BatBat’s younger brother, it was observed that he was not eating and looking for his brother.
The caregivers expressed hopes of finding him a forever home “so he can avoid the same fate”.
On 17 Nov, they had not found a fosterer or adopter yet, saying all their rescues needed medical attention.
Younger of Marine Terrace community cats dies on 18 Nov
However, at about 6.30pm on 18 Nov, another tragedy took place.
A feeder named Mdm Tan was feeding other cats when she heard a commotion and saw a crowd at the same spot where BatBat had been killed.
Running over, she saw an agonising sight — BatBat’s brother dead on the road, having been run over by a car.
Cats of Marine Terrace is still trying to find out what happened as they are not sure why he went back to the same spot where his brother was killed.
Fosterer had been found for brother
More upsetting was the fact that BatBat’s brother’s fate could have been avoided.
Cats of Marine Terrace revealed that they had already found someone to take him in when he met with the accident.
Now that both brothers are dead, the page expressed helplessness, saying they know “nothing much can or would be done” to the driver or who ran over BatBat.
They shared the mournful story so it could “serve as a reminder that our community cats are part of this world and deserve to be in this world with us humans”.
