Man in US found dead in tanning bed 3 days after entering gym
A 39-year-old man, Derek Sink, was found dead in a tanning bed in a gym in Indianapolis, United States (US) after going missing for three days.
Mr Sink’s body was found on Monday (11 Nov) morning local time, after his family had reported him missing on Sunday (10 Nov).
According to US local news outlet WTHR13, his family members confirmed that Mr Sink had gone to a tanning bed at a Planet Fitness outlet on Friday, and they lost contact with him since.
Mr Sink’s aunt said he was wearing an ankle monitor when he was reported missing. However, the ankle monitor indicated that he never left the gym.
The family also shared that he was struggling with addiction issues. Additionally, a needle was found in his room at the gym.
The cause of Mr Sink’s death is yet to be determined by the police.
Foul smell led to the discovery of man’s body
A woman, along with other individuals who visited the gym that morning, reported noticing a foul smell in the building.
She said the smell became stronger near the tanning rooms, which had been closed with a sign saying: “Tanning is currently unavailable.”
“The tanning bed has a door, I believe, but still, why are we not concerned that the tanning bed has been closed for three days, potentially?” said one of the witnesses, a woman named Elizabeth Len.
The victim’s family said they hoped to see stricter policies on cleaning and an end-of-day checklist from the staff to prevent such tragedies from happening again, as reported by WTHR13.
Police investigation is ongoing
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) confirmed with local media that they are investigating the case but did not disclose further investigation details.
A Planet Fitness spokesperson expressed condolences over Mr Sink’s death and said the franchise owner is helping the police with the investigation.
