7 drink products found to contain medicinal substances
On Thursday (14 Nov), the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) warned about seven drink products found to contain medicinal substances that are not permitted in food.
Six of the products are energy drinks while the remaining beverage was listed as fibre enzyme drink.
SFA revealed that the drinks were sold on various e-commerce platforms.
Affected drinks contain substances that could cause side effects
The seven affected products are:
- Berryshine Pure Enzyme Fiber with Prebiotics,
- BUM Energy Drink – Blue Snow Cone
- BUM Energy Drink – Champion Mentality
- BUM Energy Drink – Peach Mango
- BUM Energy Drink – Cherry Frost
- BUM Energy Drink – Citrus Burst
- BUM Energy Drink – Orange Sunrise
The Berryshine drink, marketed as a “fibre enzyme drink”, contained sennosides.
The compound is used to relieve constipation but may cause side effects such as muscle weakness and/or cramps.
SFA added that the product was listed as a “product of Singapore” despite being produced in Malaysia.
The other six BUM drinks, imported from the United States (US), were found to contain citicoline — a substance used to treat acute stroke, traumatic brain injuries, and neurological disorders.
Side effects of citicoline include insomnia, headaches, dizziness, changes in blood pressure, and shortness of breath.
E-commerce platforms ordered to remove listings of affected products
SFA shared that it has worked with e-commerce websites to remove listings of the affected products and to stop selling them immediately.
Customers who have consumed the drinks and are concerned about their health are encouraged to see a doctor.
