New homes to take over former Orto site in Yishun
A new housing estate will take over the area that Orto Leisure Park previously occupied in Yishun.
The new Chencharu estate will boast around 10,000 new homes, with the majority being public housing.
Homes in the area will be within close proximity to existing facilities such as Khatib MRT station and HomeTeam NS Khatib.
The first Build-to-Order (BTO) project with 1,200 units in the area will launch in June this year.
HDB plans to launch 19,600 BTOs this year, including in new Chencharu estate
On Tuesday (5 March), Minister for National Development Desmond Lee announced the new development during his ministry’s Committee of Supply debate.
The same day, the Housing & Development Board (HDB) issued a press release detailing its upcoming plans to launch 19,600 BTO flats this year to meet the nation’s housing demand.
This includes homes in the new Chencharu estate in Yishun, which will sit on the site formerly occupied by popular prawning and supper spot Orto.

It will offer more choices for home buyers to live closer to their families staying in the North, facilitating mutual care and support, said HDB.

According to the press release, HDB plans to build around 10,000 homes in the Chencharu housing area.
The Board is also setting aside at least 80% of these houses for public housing.
It will also set up new recreational, community, and commercial facilities to cater to the residents. These are in addition to existing facilities at Khatib Central and HomeTeam NS Khatib.
The first BTO project in Chencharu, which comprises about 1,200 units of 2-room Flexi to 5-room flats, will launch in June 2024.
Other housing projects in the area will launch progressively over the next few years, added HDB.
HDB also shared that it’s studying the possibility of introducing a new residential neighbourhood at Gillman Barracks in Telok Blangah.
The space is currently occupied by various tenants such as offices, creative lifestyle, arts, and F&B outlets.
