At least 20 people were allegedly injured and sent to the hospital, with reports of over 10 people being killed.

The perpetrator, a 62-year-old man surnamed Fan, was shortly apprehended by the police.

Victims lay on the ground following incident

According to Liberty Times Net (LTN), the SUV hit people walking around the area at around 7.48pm.

Several videos of the aftermath of the incident show a number of bloodied individuals lying on the ground and scattered across the road, while other people frantically called authorities.

As the Zhuhai Public Security Bureau has not disclosed much information, the exact number of victims has not been confirmed.

Zhuhai residents speculate terrorism

Meanwhile, the driver was arrested shortly after the incident and authorities are working to identify his motive.

According to witnesses, vehicles usually cannot enter the fenced playground, so they are confused as to how such an incident could happen.

On the other hand, a Chinese news writer based in Italy shared that a property ownership group in Zhuhai released a statement to its members, saying the “chaos” may have been caused by “foreign forces”.

They purportedly urged citizens not to repost about the incident to avoid panic and as a way to “support” the country.

LTN also noted that attacks fueled by suspected retaliation against society have been happening frequently in the country recently.
