Singapore tuition centre gives out branded handbags to long-time patrons
Chinese Language Centre, a tuition centre specialising in the Chinese language in Singapore, has made headlines recently for handing out an unusual gift for parents — a branded Coach handbag.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, the tuition centre wished to express their gratitude to parents through the gift. The handbag is only given to parents of students who have been enrolled in the centre since its opening four years ago.

A notice of the initiative was displayed outside their branch at the NEWest mall on West Coast Drive.
“If your same child has been studying in our centre for four years, please contact. You will get a brand-name COACH bag,” the notice reads.

For context, a Coach bag typically costs around S$650.
Giving back to parents for their unwavering support
When asked about their unconventional gift, Mr Zhang — the person taking the lead on the initiative — shared that the gift was merely a gesture to thank parents for their support since the tuition centre’s establishment in 2020.
However, Mr Zhang did not disclose additional details regarding the handbag initiative — including how many parents were eligible and how much the bags set the tuition centre back.
Unsurprisingly, many parents were delighted about their lavish gift.
Nevertheless, some parents had doubts about the marketing tactic. Some worried that such a rewards strategy would attract a surplus of sign-ups and consequently disperse teaching resources.
“The main reason why I let my child come here to study is because I think the centre teaches well. The number of students in each class is relatively small, so the teacher can concentrate on teaching,” Yang Zhiting (transliterated from Chinese) told Lianhe Zaobao.
“This sounds more like a promotional tactic, so I don’t plan to take it.”
