Twins in different countries celebrate birthdays together through Portals

Celebrating special occasions away from home can be a lonely experience. But thanks to video calls, people can feel like their loved ones are right beside them.

Recently, twins Cris and Evan Ramos, living in the Philippines and Ireland, took celebrating their birthdays together to a different level — through live-streaming public art installations called Portals.

Strangers sing ‘Happy Birthday’ for them

According to Cris’ Instagram video, posted last Thursday (29 Jan), she went to the Portal in Dublin at 6pm local time, while Evan went to the one in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Taguig, at 2am.

She bought a cake and candles to surprise her brother, sharing that she was actually late to their meetup.

While the art installation does not transmit audio to and from either location, Cris sang a ‘Happy Birthday’ song for Evan while strangers at the BGC Portal sang along.

Portals founder and Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys also commented on Cris’ Instagram post, wishing them a happy birthday.

Speaking to MS News, Mr Gylys said: “It always warms my heart seeing new ways people connect and celebrate life through Portals sculptures.”

He added: “We are all building Portals together by adding stories on top of them – our jokes, dances, and memes – that travel across social media [to] feed and touch countless souls around the world.”

Portals connect people in multiple countries

“Portals are sculptures that form a global network that is going to act as a bridge to a united planet,” Mr Gylys explained in an Instagram video.

He clarified that the sculptures not only connect two countries, but also rotate between multiple locations every minute.

Besides BGC and Dublin, there are currently Portals in Vilnius, Lithuania; Lublin, Poland; Philadelphia, USA; and Ipswich, UK.

The BGC Portal was unveiled on 21 Jan and is the first-ever Portal in Asia.
