Singaporean Woman Encourages Beginner Runners To Prioritise Taking It Slow In Regular Workouts
For most of us, working out to stay fit for the year ahead was probably part of our year-end resolution. However, it can be difficult to know when to start, especially for beginners.
Fortunately, a fitness enthusiast in Singapore has come to us in this time of need to share some much-needed tips.
She imparted her own advice for those looking to start running, emphasising that taking it slow is key to such workouts.
Singaporean woman shares tips for beginner runners
Posting to TikTok, the OP, Jia Xuan, shared some tips for those looking to begin running — first and foremost being, “run slow to run fast”.
She explained that beginners would want to get their body used to the motions involved with running and build up their stamina as well.
Jia Xuan also took the opportunity to reveal her personal journey with running.
“When I first started my running journey three years ago,” she said, “I couldn’t even run 700m.”
This was due to her sprinting the distance, as she hated running and wanted to get it “over and done with”.
“I learnt that if you wanna go far you go slow,” Jia Xuan continued. “It’s okay to slow down and just take it easy.”
Runners should prioritise effort over pace, distance or time
She went on to explain the concept of easy runs, which beginners can aspire towards.
Easy runs, she said, are runs that individuals can maintain while having a conversation with someone.
The effectiveness of these workouts is dependent on effort, Jia Xuan added — more so than pace, distance or time.
She further noted that the effort everyone would be able to put in their runs would vary.
“Try not to compare yourself to others because everyone’s progress is different,” she encouraged.
Some might run faster, some might run slower.
Most important of all is to enjoy the process of running to ensure it could be done in the long term, Jia Xuan advised.
“You just wanna enjoy yourself when running so that you can do this in the long run… pun unintended,” she joked.
Many tips out there for beginner runners
Staying fit should be a priority for Singaporeans, even in this current heat.
Last year, SportSG and the Health Promotion Board encouraged adults to aim to clock 150 to 300 minutes of exercise per week.
Of course, Jia Xuan’s tips aren’t the only ones out there for those who’d like to begin adopting a healthier lifestyle.
Do conduct your own research and find what’s best for you and the type of run or exercise routine you wish to embark on. For those who’d like to pursue competitive running, consulting a professional athlete might be best. Good luck!
