Malaysian authorities collect S$2.7M in outstanding fines after offering 60% discount
Malaysian authorities reportedly collected RM9.1 million (S$2.7 million) in overdue fines after offering a 60% discount for traffic violations.
The ‘discounted’ fine scheme took place from 22 – 24 Nov and was part of the current government’s second-year anniversary celebrations.
Settled 103,590 summonses in 3 days
The discount led to a massive number of Malaysian motorists rushing to pay their outstanding fines.
According to The Star, about 103,590 tickets were settled across the three-day period.
In a statement, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the top three offences were:
- Speeding
- Ignoring traffic signals
- Illegal parking
Mohd Yusri said the authorities were “heartened” by the 32,500 motorists who headed down to settle their summons.

In total, the Malaysian authorities collected RM9.1 million (S$2.7 million) through the initiative.
Reminder for Malaysians not to wait for discounted fines
Despite the turnout, Mohd Yusri urged the public not to wait for discounts to settle their fines.
To encourage violators to pay their fines, he said the government is exploring ways to increase inconvenience for motorists.
He said authorities are currently looking at nationwide discounts through online payments through government portals.
