Drunk monk crashes into motorcyclist in Thailand, killing woman on the spot
A 52-year-old monk in Thailand has been arrested after causing a fatal crash while driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to Thai news outlet Channel 7, the incident took place on Wednesday (21 Jan), in Uthumphon Phisai District, Sisaket.
Monk slams into victim’s motorcycle at high speed
According to preliminary investigation, the victim, 53-year-old Ms Worawan (name transliterated from Thai), was riding her Yamaha motorcycle home when her vehicle ran out of fuel.

She parked her bike by the side of the road and walked to a nearby shop to buy petrol.
Once she returned to her motorbike, a black Toyota sedan slammed into her motorcycle at high speed.
Despite efforts to revive her, Ms Worawan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police found that the driver was a 52-year-old monk, identified as Somphon (name transliterated from Thai), who was heavily intoxicated at the time.

The monk had removed his saffron robes and appeared unsteady, struggling to sit still, according to reports from Channel 7.
Offender defrocked, faces charges
Police conducted a breathalyser test on the monk, and the result revealed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 206mg/dL, over four times the legal limit of 50mg/dL.
After his arrest, the monk was defrocked in a ceremony at Wat Ban Yang.
Police then took him to the Uthumphon Phisai Police Station, but he was too intoxicated to provide a clear statement. Nonetheless, he confessed to consuming alcohol before the crash.

He was placed in a holding cell to sober up before formal interrogation.
The monk faces charges of reckless driving causing death and driving under the influence.
Heartbroken daughter mourns loss of mother
The victim’s daughter, 26, shared that she had been chatting with her mother just an hour before the accident.
After finishing her work shift at 8am, she received the devastating news at 9am that her mother had been killed in the crash.
She expressed her shock and grief, calling for the maximum penalty for the monk, according to Khaosod.
