Lot One Mall’s Délifrance Closes For Deep Cleaning After Cockroach Spotted Among Pastries
Foreign objects — especially those that are alive — in food are the last thing anyone wants to see when they’re trying to enjoy a meal.
Unfortunately, this seems to have been happening quite often of late in Singapore.
Recently, a customer at the Délifrance outlet in Lot One Shoppers’ Mall in Choa Chu Kang spotted a cockroach while checking out some pastries.
The baby cockroach appeared to be crawling around the display, sparking worry as to how many pastries it might have come into contact with.
Since the incident, Délifrance has stated that they have temporarily closed the outlet for deep cleaning.
Délifrance customer claims cockroach was ‘running all over the pastries’
Via a post shared in the Complaint Singapore Facebook group yesterday (11 May), the customer said that they spotted a cockroach at the Délifrance outlet in Lot One.
According to their caption, the bug was “running all over the pastries”.
The OP also shared photos in which the baby cockroach can be seen beside the Pain Au Chocolat and Sultana Croissant pastries.
However, the OP did not specify the date and time on which they saw the roach.
Netizens raise concerns over cockroach in Délifrance outlet
Needless to say, the sighting alarmed many fellow Facebook users and sparked concerns about food safety at Délifrance.
Multiple people tried to bring the matter to the attention of authorities like the National Environment Agency (NEA) and Délifrance themselves.
Another user commented that the situation is worrying for children and elderly folk who might have more sensitive stomachs.
One netizen pointed out that the recent influx of cockroaches found in food may be due to the hot weather.
Meanwhile, another commenter poked fun at the incident by joking that the outlet’s staff will simply dismiss the cockroach as a “walking raisin”.
Délifrance outlet temporarily closed for deep cleaning
Following the uproar over the incident, Délifrance Singapore put out a statement below the initial post.
They apologised and expressed regret over the matter while emphasising that they have always taken the safety of customers and staff “very seriously”.
They then stated that they will take “full responsibility”, mentioning that immediate action has been taken to close the outlet for deep cleaning.
The company also vowed to “regain control” of the matter.
Finally, they asked the OP to share their particulars with them so that they may “make things better”.
Hopefully, this will alert other bakeries as well as other eateries to review and strengthen their hygiene SOPs.
