Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag sacked, Ruud van Nistelrooy takes charge in the interim
Less than one day after a dismal defeat to West Ham, Manchester United have sacked manager Erik ten Hag.
The news was announced in a statement on the English club’s website that said he had “left his role” as men’s first-team manager.

Erik ten Hag won two trophies in 2.5 years
BBC reporter Simon Stone said on X that club CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth broke the news to ten Hag at the club’s training ground near Carrington on Monday (28 Oct) morning.

In the statement, Manchester United said they were “grateful” to ten Hag, 54, for everything he has done at the club.
During his 2.5-year reign since April 2022, he won two trophies — the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024, memorably beating “noisy neighbours” Manchester City in the final.

The club also wished him well for the future.
Manchester United manager sacked after worst start to EPL season since 1990
The Dutchman’s job was in question at the end of last season, particularly after Sir Jim Ratcliffe became minority owner of Manchester United and took over its sporting operations.
After the surprise FA Cup win, though, he signed a contract extension till 2026.
However, he started the current Premier League season badly, making their worst-ever start to the season since 1990 with just three wins in nine games. This included a 0-3 hammering at home by fierce rivals Liverpool.
The team fared little better in the Europa League, drawing their first three games.
His bosses finally decided to pull the plug after Manchester United fell 2-1 to West Ham on Sunday (27 Oct) night.

It left the 20-time English champions in 14th place out of 20 teams in the league.
Ruud van Nistelrooy is interim head coach
Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former Machester United striker, will take charge of the team as interim head coach while a new permanent manager is found.
He will be supported by the current coaching team.
The 48-year-old is Manchester United’s ninth manager (including caretakers) in the 11 years since legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
Since then, the club has gone through five permanent managers — David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Erik ten Hag.
They have also not won a Premier League title since that year.
