Missing Woman In Sentosa Tried To Help Capsized Companion

The woman who recently went missing in Sentosa waters was reportedly trying to help a companion who had capsized.

A friend of the woman revealed to the media that currents had swept her under when she tried to render assistance to the male kayaker.

Eventually, a passing boat managed to rescue the male kayaker, but the woman remains missing.

Search operations for the woman are still ongoing.

According to Channel NewsAsia (CNA), Sim Cher Huey, founder of kayaking retailer Kayakasia, was part of the search operations for the missing woman.

Reportedly, a man and a woman capsized on Sunday (22 Oct), between 9.30am and 10am, off the southern end of Sentosa.

The pair were part of a group of three who were kayaking from Sentosa to the Southern Islands on their own boats.

A fourth kayaker subsequently met them on the waters and joined the group.

The location of the incident was near a line of blue floating security barriers. It was a “particularly tricky place”, as the currents met the barriers, said Mr Sim.

At first, it was the male kayaker who capsized. Unfortunately, the woman then overturned as well while trying to help him.

Following that, their companions contacted the Singapore Police Coast Guard for help.

A passing boat eventually managed to rescue the male kayaker. However, the woman was still nowhere to be found.

One of the people who was onboard the passing vessel, Alvin Ng, told CNA that his friend was the one who spotted the man’s kayak and shouted for their captain to stop.

Apparently, this was a distance away from the floating barriers.

The boat then picked up the male kayaker. He was reportedly holding onto his kayak and appeared “very tired and confused”.

Mr Ng and his friends then spotted another capsized kayak about 200m to 300m away.

The boat then picked up the second kayak, but they were unable to locate the woman. They only managed to find what they believed to be her belongings, such as her personal floatation device.

Search operations still underway

On Sunday (22 Oct), the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received word that a person had gone missing off the coast of Sentosa Island.
