Singapore Red Cross urgently requests AB- blood donors due to shortage
The Singapore Red Cross has issued an urgent call for AB- blood donors due to a critical shortage.
In a Facebook post on 21 Nov, the organisation highlighted the immediate need for donations to save lives.
The appeal highlighted the critical need for AB- donations, stressing their life-saving importance for patients in urgent need.
Current blood stock levels & rarity of AB-
According to the Singapore Red Cross website, most blood types have healthy stock levels.
However, AB+ blood is marked as low, while AB- is critically low, accompanied by a warning symbol.
When hovered over, the icon reinforces the urgency: “We urgently need your blood NOW. Please donate today.”
AB- is the rarest blood type in Singapore, comprising just 0.1% of the donor pool.
How to donate
Potential donors can check their eligibility on the Health Sciences Authority website before booking an appointment.
Once eligible, donors can visit the Singapore Red Cross website, click on the ‘Donate Now’ button, and log in with their SingPass to schedule a donation at a Blood Bank.
Information about the five Blood Banks, including their locations and opening hours, is also available on the Red Cross website.
