10 Reasons Why Rosmah Mansor Is An Exercise In Excess
Madam Rosmah Mansor is a divisive figure in Malaysia.
In Singapore, though, we barely know her.
Many of us just know her as the sallow-faced lady on the arm of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.
And purveyor of luxury handbags.
Sadly for her, her husband’s reign as Prime Minister was unexpectedly cut short in last week’s shock election result.
Let’s take a look at the life of the self-styled First Lady of Malaysia (FLOM).
1. She is two years older than her husband
Mdm Rosmah Mansor is two years Mr Najib’s senior.
She will be turning 67 this year, while her spouse will celebrate his 65th.
The pair tied the knot in 1987, and have been happily together ever since.
The couple have two children together, Mohd Norashman Najib and Nooryana Najwa Najib.
2. She used to be a looker in the old days
And we mean oooold.
You wouldn’t have guessed it from looking at her now, but Mdm Rosmah used to be quite the looker.
She’ll never reveal her secrets, but an aesthetic doctor named Dr Siew Tuck Wah has estimated the extent of work various “aesthetic doctors” have performed on her face.
3. She is a Datin (female equivalent of a Datuk)
Mdm Rosmah’s full name is quite the mouthful.
Ready for it? Here it is: Yang Amat Berbahagia Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Rosmah binti Mansor.
It is unsure why exactly why she was conferred the prestigious title.
Perhaps it’s due to the many heroic acts of selfless activism detailed on her website.
4. She has 2 children from a previous marriage …
… one of which is Azrene Ahmad, who recently wrote an emotional Facebook post that condemned her mother’s actions during Mr Najib’s leadership (see point 10 for more).
Not much is known about the other child, but Mdm Rosmah isn’t alone in carrying over children from a previous marriage.
Mr Najib has three children from his previous marriage with Puteri Zainah binti Iskandar.
5. She has a Master’s degree
According to aforementioned online biography, Mdm Rosmah holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree.
She is said to hold a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology from University Malaya and a Master’s degree in Sociology and Agriculture Extension from Louisiana State University.
6. She has been awarded multiple awards, honorary degrees
Mdm Rosmah barely has enough space in her trophy cabinet to hold all her special awards and honorary degrees from universities over the world.
Here she is holding a Honorary Doctorate of Letters, courtesy of Curtin University.
That’s not even close to being all. She also has Honorary Doctorates from the following institutes:
- Universiti Teknologi MARA
- Limkokwing University of Creative Technology
- Sultan Idris University Education
She also has multiple “high awards” from various Malaysian states, including Melaka, Selangor, Sabah, and Sarawak.
7. She’s behind the PERMATA programme
The PERMATA programme is a platform of support for young Malaysians of all age groups.
The suite of programmes aids everyone from newborns to intellectually gifted teenagers and talents in the performing arts.
But it hasn’t always been well-received: critics accuse it of being elitist and urban-centric.
8. She’s on the board of various associations
We’ve lost count of the number of hats that Mdm Rosmah wears.
Another feather in one of those caps is her presence on the boards of many an association.
She holds the position of President or Patron in the following institutions:
- Welfare Association of Minister’s Wives
- Girl Guides Association of Malaysia
- Badminton Association of Malaysia
- Children in Hope Foundation
- Malaysian Nature Society
- Malaysian AIDS Council
- Society of the Orthopedically Handicapped Malaysia
- National Heart Institute Foundation
- Thalasemia Association
- National Athletes’ Welfare Association
- Development of Underprivileged Children’s Foundation
9. She has an eye for fashion
To keep her roost as the most fashionable FLOM, Mdm Rosmah makes sure to wear the freshest clothes and carry the most expensive handbags.
Unfortunately, an unforeseen circumstance of her raven-like hoarding of shiny things and trinkets has led to some troubles for the policemen who conducted a raid of an apartment linked to Mr Najib.
As many as 284 handbags were seized by the police officers.
Along with the excessive baggage was 72 bags of cash and a bunch of luxury watches.
A full list of items seized can be found here.
10. She allegedly abused her daughter and husband
One of her daughters, Azrene Ahmad, penned a scathing Facebook post, where she condemned the actions of her and Mr Najib.
Among the list of accusations are stories of abuse, smuggling, and black magic.
Read it to believe it.
A historic loss
When the dust settles on Mr Najib and the Barisan Nasional, Mdm Rosmah Mansor will probably be remembered by the masses as vain, selfish and prideful.
Will history be kind to the woman who has more in common with Grace Mugabe than Michelle Obama?
