Founders’ Memorial to feature running track & amphitheatre

In remembrance of Singapore’s founding values and ideals, a memorial is set to be built in the heart of our city.

Furthermore, it serves to remind Singaporeans of how we became an independent nation, inspiring them to commit to our future.

Out of 193 design submissions, only 1 came out victorious on 9 Mar. The winning design is a collaboration between Kengo Kuma & Associates and K2LD Architects.

It features a symphony of slopes, reminiscent of the existing Marina Barrage.

Furthermore, these slopes serve as paths that strategically directs visitors to an amphitheater, where events will be held.

From the pictures, we can also see the incorporation of a running track within the building.

Showing “great potential to provide multi-layered experiences for all visitors”, according to a spokesperson from the Founders’ Memorial, we can expect more events to be held here.

A living memorial

The design is inspired by a “journey retracing the legacy of the founders”, which reflects the function of the memorial.

Aiming to encapsulate the City in a Garden reputation that Singapore enjoys, this living memorial will be marked by a forest trail and lake surrounding the building.

Simultaneously, it is a public space for Singaporeans to learn, share, and reflect on our founding spirits and values.

The viewing gallery overseeing our skyline might then be the best place to rediscover what our nation has to offer.

Connected to Founders’ Memorial MRT

Furthermore, the Founders’ Memorial blends in seamlessly with current facilities. It joins the scenic view as if it has always been part of it.

According to Founders’ Memorial, the “bold and imaginative design that rises out of the landscape” is one of the selling points of the winning design.

Just like many other iconic buildings like the ArtScience Museum, it will add a unique edge to our vibrant cityscape.

Additionally, Mr Lee Tzu Yang, Chairman of the Founders’ Memorial Committee, also pointed out the design’s “good accessibility and integration with Bay East Garden and connectivity to various transportation nodes.”

It is to be linked with the Founders’ Memorial MRT station on the Thomson-East Coast Line.

Look forward to 2027

The local and Japanese firms are working alongside our National Heritage Board and Gardens By The Bay.

Construction will commence in 2022. Hence, you can expect the monument’s arrival by 2027.
