Student suffers trauma after allegedly being assaulted at Yishun school
On 27 Oct, the uncle of an 11-year-old primary school student in Singapore took to Facebook to share a distressing incident in which his nephew was the victim of an alleged assault by a schoolmate earlier this month.
The attack, which reportedly left the child with head swelling, facial bruises, and stomach injuries, has caused lasting emotional impact, he said.
Student sustains injuries and signs of trauma after assault
According to the Facebook post by Mr Jordan Chan, the alleged assault occurred during school hours at Ahmad Ibrahim Primary School on 8 Oct.
Mr Chan stated that his nephew was “violently beaten up” by another student, who punched and kicked him in the stomach, leading to visible swelling and bruising.
“My nephew has been very traumatised and might have PTSD over this issue,” he wrote, adding that the child remains unwilling to talk about the incident, possibly due to lingering distress.
Speaking to MS News, his mother, Esther, 46, told MS News that the attack followed an exchange in which her son resisted the other boy’s demands to tell him something.
He scolded her son, and when her son replied that he shouldn’t be spoken to that way, the boy allegedly began beating him up.
She observed that her son’s behaviour has since changed, and he now appears withdrawn. For instance, when her brother wanted to hug him, he tried to avoid contact, said the business development executive.
The bruises are still visible but are healing, she said. However, her son now tends to “get emotional” at minor triggers that remind him of the incident, she added.
Bully’s family have not responded
Mr Chan noted that while the school is addressing the incident, details provided to the family have been limited.
Although the alleged bully’s parents apologised to the school, they have not reached out directly to them, he added.
Esther said she brought her son to the A&E department of KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), where he was admitted for observation.
The victim’s family later sent an email to the other party requesting compensation for the medical bills from KKH, but received no response.
Family seeking contact information for bully’s parents
In his post, Mr Chan also attached a letter from an art school theatre class that the boy has attended for two years.
The letter detailed observations from his teachers, who noted that he seemed “unusually quiet and withdrawn” during class on 12 Oct after the incident.
This was worrying, they noted, as he “is typically cheerful and chatty”.
The boy had confided in them that he was recently bullied by a schoolmate. They also “observed some visible bruises on his face”, and he also complained of a headache then.
Concerned for his well-being, they recommended professional counselling to help him process the “unpleasant experience” and prevent any long-term emotional impact.
Mr Chan urged netizens to share his post and asked anyone with the contact information of the bully’s parents to come forward and help.
