ComfortDelGro Taxi Rams Into Opening Car Door, Sparks Debate On Who Is At Fault

Video Of ComfortDelGro Taxi Colliding With Opening Car Door Goes Viral

If there’s one thing Singaporeans love to do (besides queuing), it’s engaging in debates, whether friendly or not so much.

And, as we’ve seen numerous times before, nothing has the ability to spark an intense conversation more than traffic incidents.

Recently, a camera caught a ComfortDelGro taxi ramming headlong into the opening door of a parked car.

The clip promptly went viral and sparked a bit of a debate on who was to blame.

Many argued that the alighting passenger was responsible for the collision, while others pointed out that the cabbie was driving recklessly.

On Tuesday (12 Jul), Facebook group Beh Chia Lor posted footage of the incident, which supposedly happened between a private hire vehicle (PHV) and ComfortDelGro cab.

At the start of the video, the PHV suddenly stops at the side of a narrow-looking road for its passenger to alight.

Right behind it is the taxi, which drives past the PHV just as the passenger opens the door to get out.

It’s disastrous timing, to say the least.

The taxi crashes right into the open door and bends it out of shape before stopping in its tracks.

A photo of the PHV shows just how badly the door was banged up. It allegedly cost S$1,100 to repair.

Netizens debate over who is to blame

The incident quickly went viral on Facebook, garnering more than 75,000 views at the time of writing.

It also sparked a debate on who was responsible for the collision. Many argued that the PHV driver was at fault for allowing their passenger to open the door on the side of a road with traffic.

The passenger who alighted got a fair share of the blame as well.

Netizens said that if the passenger had chosen to disembark at a safer location, they could probably have avoided this matter altogether. Some added that the passenger should have checked their surroundings before opening the door.

On the other hand, there are a few pointing fingers at the cab driver instead, noting that they should have exercised caution and kept a safe distance.

Whoever it was that’s guilty for causing this mishap, we think we can all agree on one thing — at least there were no reports of any injuries.

All motorists should exercise caution on roads

Even without casualties, it is unsettling to see how forceful the collision was. If the passenger had chosen to alight just a second earlier, the aftermath could’ve been a lot more tragic.

At the end of the day, this entire incident seems to be the result of very unfortunate timing, as well as some poor and careless decisions.

While some may say that the cabbie should have watched where they were going, the PHV driver should have let their passenger off at a safer location. The passenger should also have gotten off on the other side, where there wouldn’t be a risk of something like this happening.

In any case, this will hopefully serve as a reminder for all road users to be careful whether they’re driving, stopping, or alighting.
