Shanmugam visits 83-year-old woman who was hit by PMA rider

While on her way to Chong Pang Market recently, an 83-year-old woman was hit from the side by a Personal Mobility Aid (PMA) rider.

The impact resulted in Madam Tan falling over and injuring her head.

Following the incident, Minister K. Shanmugam, who serves as Member of Parliament (MP) for Nee Soon GRC’s Chong Pang division, paid a visit to the elderly woman.

Elderly woman ‘recovering well’ but still experiences knee pain

On Monday (8 July), Mr Shanmugam shared the news on his Facebook page.

He highlighted that on the day of the incident, a passer-by dialed an ambulance, which subsequently conveyed Madam Tan to the hospital.

Fortunately, she was allowed to be discharged on the same day.

Upon visiting Madam Tan, the minister noted that she was “recovering well”. However, she still continues to experience knee pain.

He further explained that the PMA rider is also an elderly individual, and uses the PMA as he has medical conditions.

Tighter regulations to be enforced on PMA riders

Describing the incident as “unfortunate”, Mr Shanmugam stressed that:

It reminds us that looking out for the safety of others on footpaths and walkways, especially seniors and young children, is a shared responsibility.

He added that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will be enforcing stricter regulations for PMAs.

In March, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Baey Yam Keng announced that around 2025, the speed limit of all PMAs will be reduced from 10km/h to 6km/h.

There will also be restrictions on the size of PMAs used on public paths, as well as a new requirement for users of mobility scooters to be certified with relevant needs such as mobility challenges.
